Is your dryer failing to produce heat?

If so, read on and we'll try to help you troubleshoot the problem on your own. Just remember: the cause of your dryer issues might not be visible on the surface. If you don't have a multimeter at home, there's a good chance you will need a repair professional to make a home visit to figure the problem out.

Firstly, check if the thermal fuse is blown. This fuse is responsible for preventing your dryer from heating too much. If the fuse blew out there will be no continuity anymore. You can test it with a multimeter. The fuse is typically located either in the housing for the blower wheel or around the heating element (more common with gas dryers).

If you do have a gas dryer, quite a few other causes could be to blame as well. First off, one of the gas valve solenoid coils might be damaged. These coils need to all be operational for your dryer to work properly. To test, determine whether the igniter is glowing (but not igniting) and replace all the coils if that's the case.

If your gas dryer igniter is not glowing at all, chances are there's no continuity (check with multimeter) and it will need to be replaced. Gas dryers also have flame sensors that can act up; if the igniter lights up and reaches the sensor level, chances are that's the actual problem here.

Of course, the heating element itself could have shorted out which can also cause the same dilemma. You can check it for continuity to determine if there's any issue there. If there's no continuity, replace the heating element and try again.

Helpful tip

Most newer dryers will have a moisture sensor. This part is responsible for determining when the contents in the dryer are sufficiently dry. If any moisture is still detected, the dryer will continue running and keep sending heat inside the machine. If your clothes dryer keeps running even after the contents are undoubtedly dry, it's possible the moisture sensor needs to be replaced. This part is pretty cheap but requires quite a bit of tedious disassembling and reassembling to replace. We recommend you get a repair professional to complete the job if you don't have past sensor replacement experience.
