Does the broil element for your electric oven need to be replaced?

Whether it shorted out, makes sparks fly or simply has visible damage, this form of oven repair should be handled in a timely manner.

Thankfully, this process is pretty simple and an experienced appliance repair DIYer will have no problem swapping out the old broil element for a new one. But, keep in mind that the relevance of various online repair guides will vary - every oven and element is different and the steps you must take to replace one will sometimes differ.

First, kill power to your oven at the circuit breaker or outlet. If you kill power at the breakers make sure you shut them both off, sometimes the two breakers are not connected together. Next, take the racks out from inside of your oven. Take out the screws attached to the broil element and take the broil element supports out.

Bring the broil element toward you. Disconnect the two wires (red and black) and remove the broil element out of your electric oven. Now you can connect the new element to the wires and put everything back together.

If you killed power at the outlet, your oven will have been pulled out from the wall. You need to make sure the rear-leveling foot attaches to the anti-tip bracket.

As you would guess, replacing a bake element is a much similar process. You simply need to unscrew the support, disconnect the wires, install the new element and put the mounting support back together.

Warning: Be careful when you disconnect the wires. It's possible for them to slip back behind the oven wall. If this happens, you'll have to take apart the rear panel to gain access to them again.

Helpful tip

Always make sure to keep your gas stovetop clean and maintained. For starters, wipe down the cooktop once you are done using it. Make sure to clean the surface once the warm indicator light turns off. Remove the burners and allow them to soak in hot, soapy water for a while before putting them back on. Make sure every component is dry before it's put back onto your gas stovetop. Further, make sure when the burners are put back on that the flame hole is aligned with the burner opening for it.
